Ideas Adrift

Welded stainless steel, ball bearings mounted on mild steel base. Kinetic

I first worked Ideas Adrift in 1990. Then it rotated about 120 degrees on its base, but I was never satisfied that it wasn't fully kinetic. I placed it in storage, and didn’t get back to it until 2007. Mounted on precision ball bearings, it is now fully, yet subtly, kinetic. It moves only with a good strong breeze.

I think of the bubble-like sections of stainless pipe and the solid steel plate round as "The Ideas". They are different weights and sizes, appropriate to our ideas that come and go on a daily basis. I particularly like the small, thick-walled pipe section, a dense idea struggling to burst through its formative wall.
